Abstract
Harijans' perception on their status: A study in Andhra Pradesh (India)
S.S. Anant
The problem of untouchability is probably the most harmful outcome of the caste-system in India. Boring recent years, encouraged by the Constitution and legal provisions, the Harijans (formerly "untouchables") have increased their struggle against oppression and injustices. This has led to open conflicts between the caste Hindus and Harijans. Harijans' perception of their status in Andhra Pradesh in South India is discussed in this paper-the results are compared with similar results from North India. The increased dissatisfaction of Harijans with their status is seen as a healthy sign for removing the discriminative aspects of the caste-system.
