Abstract
Contiguity with versus instrumentality of reinforcement as a condition for liking: A theoretical note
S. Kanekar
Lott and his co-workers have demonstrated that contiguity of a discriminable other person with positive reinforcement is a sufficient condition for Liking that person. It is argued in this note that instrumentality (being a source or deliverer) of reinforcement is not only unessential for generating liking responses but is effective only because and when it involves symbolic contiguity. Thus contiguity with reinforcement, either physical and/or symbolic, appears to be not onlh a sufficient but also a necessary condition for liking or dislike depending on the nature of reinforcement.
