Abstract
Cross-cultural analyses of body-behavior relations: I. A comparison of body build stereotypes of Japanese and American males and females
S. Iwawaki & R.M. Lerner
The intercultural continuity of body build-behavior stereotypes was assessed by asking 90 male and 9f1 female Japanese students to attribute 30 behavioral descriptions to stimulus picture of a male Endomorph, Mesomorph, and Ectomorph, respectively. Indicative of cultural continuity in the evaluative dimension of these stereotypes, predominantly positive Mesomorph stereotypes were found, and the Endomorph and Ectomorph attributions were predominantly negative. However, a cross-cultural reversal in the magnitude of these negative stereotypes was found. Japanese subjects' negative Ectomorph stereotype was of a greater magnitude than their negative Endomorph stereotype, while the reverse is the case in American samples. These results were discussed in respect to different values in the respective cultures.
