Abstract
A Study of Social Perception as a Function of Approval Motive
N.K.M. Tripathi
The present study was conducted to investigate the role of approval motive in social perception. Manipulated in a 3 X 2 X 2 factorial experimental design two levels of approval motive, two arousal conditions and three types of stimulus descriptions were used as independent variables. 20 Ss were randomly assigned to each treatment condition. Thus, 240 Ss were tested. An analysis of variance indicated significant main effects of all the three independent variables. Also, out of three double interactions two, i.e., approval motive x arousal and arousal X description were found to be significant. In nutshell, the results supported the hypothesis that social event perception is influenced by approval motive, its aroused and non-aroused conditions and descriptive cues provided about the stimuli.
