Abstract
Dimensions of Alienation: A Factor-Analytic Study
A. Kureshi & M. Dutt
Empirical studies of alienation have been rather scarce and inadequate for want of a clear-cut definition of the phenomenon. The study, therefore, aimed at the structural analysis of alienation to arrive at the true meaning, and consequently to develop a scale for measuring alienation. The various conceptualizations of alienation, current in social sciences, were focussed upon in order to discover the points of convergence and commonalty of substance among them. This was achieved by means of factor analysis. Five factors emerged as a result of factor analysis: despair, disillusionment, psychological vaccum, unstructured universe and narcissism. Alienation was found not to be a unitary phenomenon. However, it carried a negative affect, designated as the `alienation syndrome'.
