A.K. Saxena
The present study aims to answer the question-How social scientist in India view themselves and physical scientists and does there exist significant discrepancies between their self image and the image of the physical scientist? Participants in a I.C.S.S.R. Research methodology course belonging to eight major states of the country and pursuing research in different social science disciplines served as respondants. The semantic differential technique with eighteen adjective scales was used to study the image of these two concepts i.e. social scientist and physical scientist. Obtained results fail to report any significant discrepancy between the self image of the social scientist and the image of physical scientist on all but three scales. Results are discussed and this study is taken to be an empirical proof of the identification that social scientists are trying to seek with physical scientists. It is suggested that it would be revealing to study how the physical scientists perceive the social scientists.
