Abstract
The Neglect of Asian Psychology in the United States
S.I. Shapiro
Classical Asian psychology is a vast source of significant psychological knowledge, yet it continues to be generally unrecognized in American psychology. This paper suggests some of the reasons for the neglect of Asian psychology. The neglect is attributed primarily to: (a) the climate of scholarship in American psychology; (b) the contemporary reward system in higher education; (c) the continuing justification of psychology as a science; (d) misconceptions about the empirical nature of Asian psychology; and (e) different cultural values. It is concluded that responsible scholarship and scientific progress necessitate recognizing the existence and significance of Asian psychology.
