Abstract
A Factorial Analysis of Achievement-Related Motives Measured by Reviesed ARMS
H. Yamauchi
The purpose of this investigation was to find out the factorial structure among achievement-related motives (motive to approach success, motive to avoid failure, and motive to avoid success) measured by revised-ARMS. The ARMS has eight subscales of five items, respectively. Subjects of four samples were asked to respond along a four-point Likert-type continuum ranging from "not at all" to "always." Sex differences in mean scores on the scales which measured a hope of success and a denying attitude for attaining success were significant. Four factors were extracted by the principal-factor analysis from the correlation matrix; the factors were then rotated by normalized varimax criterion. The results provided an opportunity to replicate previous factorial structure.
