Abstract
The Moral Judgements under Different Contextual Considerations--Comparison between Taiwan and Japan
Wen-Ying Lin & T. Naito
Moral judgements have been assumed to change on the basis of contextual considerations required. The objectives of this study were to investigate the influence of various considerations on the moral judgement, and to examine the pattern of moral judgements under each condition in different cultural areas. 260 undergraduate students (156 Japanese subjects and 104 Chinese subjects) were administrated a questionnaire including 16 brief storeis. Every single story contained information about the intention of the actor and the consequence of the actor's action. There were also five instructions representing various contextual considerations of judgements. The findings showed that the weights the subjects assigned to intention cues varied depending on the type of contextual considerations instructed. The cultural difference hypothesis was, however, only partially confirmed.
