Abstract
Infuluence of Stimulus Duration and Interstimulus Interval on Recall Memory for Pictures
S. Kobayashi
To assess the effect of stimulus duration and interstimulus interval on memory for pictures, an experiment was performed. Subjects were instructed to memorize a list of 24 line drawings of familiar objects to be recalled. The facilitative effect on recall memory for pictures was obtained when given a longer (5-sec.) rather than a shorter (1-sec.) stimulus duration, with interstimulus interval held constant 1 sec. There was facilitative effect on recall memory for pictures when interstimulus interval was increased from 1 to 5 sec. if stimulus duration was 1 sec. When two groups were given the same total time (6 sec. for stimulus duration plus interstimulus interval), the group given the longer (5-sec.) stimulus duration was significantly superior to a group given a longer (5-sec.) interstimulus interval in the middle trial.
