Factors of Mate Selection: Testing Assortative Mating Theory

The
present study was conducted to determine sex differences in physical
factors (facial attractiveness, physique attractiveness and height)
of mate selection with regard to the variable of subject's physical
characteristics. A checklist meant for measuring physical factors
of mate selection was administered on 75 male and 75 female post-graduate
students of A. M. U., Aligarh. The main findings of the study were:
1. Male and Female subjects with respect to their level of facial
attractiveness showed significantly higher liking for the high attractive
and medium attractive mates respectively. 2. Significant differences
were not found to exist between male and female subjects' preferences
for the pyknic mates and between athletic male and athletic female
subjects' preferences for the athletic and pyknic mates. 3. Tall-height
mates and medium-height mates were significantly more preferred by
the female and male subjects with respect to their height.
