Abstract
Some Antecedents of Mate Selection: An Experimental Study on Perception of Spouse
H.C. Suman
In comparison to impression formation and interpersonal attraction, mate selection encompasses a complex set of affective components and interpersonal judgement; and it seems to be more serious issue for women than for men. The present investigation attempts to explore the antecedents of mate selection in experimental setting by employing a 2 x 2 x 2 (physical attractiveness x job security x similarity in caste) factorial design on marital perception ratings by 180 postgraduate students. The findings confirm only the physical attractiveness of stimulus target as a prominent antecedent of mate selection. Correlation analysis also appears to indicate the perceived physical attractiveness of target by perceiver as a factor associated with perceiver's marital choice. The significant interaction between job security and similarity in caste (p < .05) has also been discussed in terms of rational considerations of marital choice.
