Abstract
Gender and Concerns: Similarities and Differences Between Canadian and Hong Kong Chinese Adolescents
D.C. Kwok & C. Violato
The present study had two purposes: (1) To widen the scope of investigation into gender and adolescent concerns by revising a questionnaire on concerns which had been used in a previous study. (2) To conduct a cross-cultural study of gender and concerns of Canadian and Hong Kong Chinese adolescents. The revised questionnaire on concerns was useful in detecting more aspects of gender differences in concerns as compared to the original one. Female adolescents (both samples) showed concern on many more variables than their male counterparts. There were similarities as well as differences with regard to gender and concerns between adolescents in the two samples. The study calls for the need to investigate sex-role perceptions and focus of concerns among adolescents in response to contemporary political and social changes.
