Abstract
Effects of Density: The Role of Moderators for the Consequences of Crowding
U. Jain
Part of the data, collected on a sample of 960 adult participants from Bhopal, India, were analyzed to assess the role of moderators for the density effects on life stress, health and withdrawal. The moderators included in the study were selected on the basis of their inclusion in earlier studies and in the Multidensity model (Paulus, 1980). Four density conditions were selected on the basis of inside and out side, high-low densities. The results showed that density did not yielded significant effects on two moderators, i.e. competition tolerance and perceived control. The correlations between moderators and consequences revealed that except withdrawal other consequences were related to different moderators. It is argued that the role of moderators can not be generalized across situations and consequences. The feeling of crowding can be treated as a significant moderator for the density effects.
