Abstract
Sex Differences and Handedness in Dichotic Listening Performance
K. Minami
Two experiments were done to investigate the effects of sex and handedness on the verbal dichotic listening performance. In Experiment 1, 40 right-handed university students (20 males and 20 females) were tested on a dichotic listening task by focused attention procedures in which subjects were instructed to attend to one prespecified ear and to report only the item heard at that ear. The results showed no sex differences between men and women as to the magnitude of a right ear advantage (REA). In Experiment 2, 40 female students (20 right-handers and 20 left-handers) were tested on the same task as that used in Experiment 1. The results indicated a slight tendency for left-handers to be weaker than right-handers in REA.
