Abstract
A Scale for the Assessment of Midlife Crisis in Chinese People
D.T.L. Shek
This paper describes the development of the Chinese Midlife Crisis Scale (C-MCS) and its related psychometric properties. A total of 1, 501 married adults responded to the C-MCS. The C-MCS was found to have acceptable internal consistency as a scale and the data obtained provide some support for the concurrent validity of the scale. Factor analysis with a three-factor solution showed that three factors were abstracted from the scale, namely, Self-Related Midlife Problems, Other-Related Midlife Problems, and Fear of Aging. By randomly splitting the total sample into two subsamples, these three factors could reliably be reproduced and high coefficients of congruence were found. The implications of the present data on the assessment of midlife crisis are discussed.
