Abstract
Relationships of Proenvironmental Attitudes with Materialism and its Associated Attitudes Toward Money
O. Iwata
Two hypotheses are set up: 1) Proenvironmentalism is negatively related to materialism; 2) Proenvironmentalism is negatively related to positive attitudes toward money. Questionnaires are administered to 46 male and 71 female undergraduates of the University of Tokushima. Each questionnaire contains a 27-item proenvironmental attitude scale, a 6-item materialism scale and a 15-item scale of attitudes toward money. Proenvironmental attitudes consist of five factors. The total score of these factors are designated as proenvironmentalism. The six-item materialism scale yields one factor, "materialism." Materialism- associated attitudes toward money have two factors. The sum of item scores for each factor is computed and product-moment correlation coefficients are calculated from the measures mentioned above. Higher scores represent stronger proenvironmental attitudes, materialism, and materialism-associated attitudes toward money. Low but significant relationships between proenvironmental attitudes and materialism-associated measures support the two hypothesis.
