Abstract
Development of a Depressive Experiences Inventory for Use with Chinese Early Adolescents
S.-K. Cheung
This paper reports the development of a new inventory designed for the measurement of depressive experiences among Chinese early adolescents. It combines the items of current symptom and mood-state measurements and emphasizes the interpersonal component, which is thought to be important in the collectivist cultures. With a sample of 527 grade 5 and 6 students, an inventory consisting of 54 items was developed. Principal components analysis of the items revealed four factors, and the sub-scales so formed demonstrated adequate internal consistency (a = 0.76 to 0.88), concurrent validity with the CDI, and construct validity with self esteem and expectation of academic competence. The items and components of the inventory are discussed with reference to the Chinese culture.
