Abstract
Stereotypes among Hindu subcastes: An interperceptual analysis
U.P. Singh
On the eve of the general elections in 1967, 1072 respondents from nine districts of Bihar (India) attributed most typical traits to six Hindu caste groups, i.e., Bhumihar, Brahmin, Chamar, Kayastha, Rajput and Yadava. The generalized stereotypes with regard to these caste groups have been determined and inter-caste as well as intra-caste perceptions analysed. A marked tendency toward ethnocentrism was noted among Brahmins, Kayasthas, Rajputs and Yadavas. The information obtained through interview suggests that apart from personal experiences, political and local leaders serve as important sources of caste-stereotypes.
