Self acceptance and adjustment
V.N. Murthy & J.M. Botkawar
The relationship between self acceptance and adjustment in Indian subjects is investigated following Rogers Hypothesis. Indian adaptation of Washburne Social Adjustment Inventory (Thaspic edition) and an adjective trait sorting tests were given to groups of adjusted normals, maladjusted but not seeking psychiatric help, and maladjusted psychiatric patient groups, matched for relevant variables. Self ideal discrepancy was taken as the measure of self acceptance. Chi square analysis and correlational analysis revealed that self-ideal discrepancy was significantly more in maladjusted but not seeking psychiatric help group and the psychiatric patients group than in the adjusted normal group; the degree of self-ideal discrepancy increased as degree of maladjustment increased, thereby indicating that self acceptance is low in maladjusted individuals.
