Binocular
vision in animals
R. Fox |
Previous
investigations of binocular visual phenomena (i.e., stereopsis, rivalry,
and Fusion) have been confined to human subjects. But recent developments
in the technology of behavioral testing and in visual display generation
make it possible to extend the inquiry to animals. This progress
report describes ongoing research concerned with a) an objective
method for measuring binocular rivalry, known as optokinetic nystagmus
rivalry, and b) operant conditioning methodology' used for measuring
stereopsis in animals. For a, data are presented suggesting that optokinetic nystagmus rivalry can be used as a valid indicator for both humans and animals. For b, measurement of stereo-acuity thresholds in the cat by the conditioned suppression method is described. |
