Abstract
A Study of the Relationship Between Connotative Images of Word Concepts and Personality Variables
M. Hironaka
To confirm the relationship between connotative images of general word concepts and personality traits and to examine the usefulness of social desirability dimension for approaching the above relationship, 57 male students were asked to fill three questionnaires: personality inventory, Semantic Differential (SD) scales on six concepts, and social desirability rating form on 18 concepts. Each subject's personal connotative images of word concepts and perceived standard connotative images were measured with the SIB scales. Results indicated that discrepancy between the personal connotative images and the standard connotative images was significantly related to maladjusted personality traits. In the present study, however, it was not supported that socially desirable or undesirable concepts should be more significantly related to personality variables than neutral concepts were.
