A
Vision of Transpersonal Psychology
S.I. Shapiro |
The
nature and vision of transpersonal psychology are discussed. Some
historical perspectives are presented, followed by sections describing
a vision of transpersonal psychology in terms of the following major
themes: (a) the centrality of ego transcendence; (b} transpersonal
actualization; (c) intrapsychic growth, including meditation and
awareness, and transpersonal psychotherapy and problem solving; (d)
potential contributions to psychological inquiry and epistemology;
(e) happiness and emotions as examples of transpersonal perspectives
on affective experiences. Other characterizations of the transpersonal
vision are possible and desirable: the discipline of transpersonal
psychology is still evolving, and its existential essence is open
to perennial expression.
