Effects
of Surrounding Noise on Visual Field Differences in Human Silhouette
Recognition
T. Hatta |
To
examine if concurrently presented surrounding stimuli affect figure
recognition, subjects matched figures which appeared in the left
or the right visual field with surrounding noise with the previously
presented standard figure. There were four types of comparison stimuli;
man's silhouette is surrounded by 1) Man's silhouettes, 2) Women's
silhouettes, 3) Children's silhouettes, and 4) Nothing. The results
indicated that firstly the matching was affected by the presence
of neighbouring stimuli and secondly the condition 4) showed the
left visual field advantage while the other conditions did not show
visual field difference. Possible mechanisms in the cerebral differential
functioning are discussed.
