Abstract
Asian Concepts in Behavioral Science
D.Y.F. Ho
The use of six key concepts in behavioral science from three Asian cultures is reviewed. These are the Chinese concepts of filial piety, jen, and face; the Japanese concepts of amae and on; and the Filipino concept of utang la loob. Overlaps in meaning among these concepts are discussed. The relational character of Asian concepts is identified, in contrast to the individualistic character of Western concepts, such as self, ego, and actor, which have enjoyed prominence in behavioral science. It is argued that, inasmuch as social behavior invariably takes place in some relational, particularly interpersonal, context, relational concepts lend themselves readily for its representation and analysis, and are thus capable of yielding a more complete account of its total complexity.
