Abstract
The Effects of Verbal Reinforcement Combinations on Children's Moral Judgments in the Direct, Vicarious, and Double Reinforcement Situations
K. Tamase
The effects of three verbal reinforcement combinations, RW, RN, and NW, upon children's performance on a Piaget's task of moral judgment were investigated in direct (Exp. 1), vicarious (Exp. 2), and double (Exp. 3) reinforcement situations. In each experiment first grade children were run in their classrooms. Positive verbal reinforcement (Right) was given for the subjective moral judgment and negative verbal reinforcement (Wrong) was given for the objective moral judgment. The main results were that (a) the children's moral judgments could be modified by direct and for vicarious verbal reinforcements, and that (b) RW and NW combinations were superior to RN combination. These results were discussed with reference to previous studies on verval conditioning and other conceptual learning tasks.
