Abstract
Short-term Recognition memory for Pictures and Words: A Dual Coding Interpretation
A.K. Srivastava & A.K. Purohit
The short term recognition memory performance for picture, ward and picture(s) +word(s) triads was tested. On the basis of dual coding theory it was hypothesized that picture and picture(s) +word(s) triads would produce approximately equal recognition performance but both of these types of traids would be superior in retention as compared to word triads. The findings were consistent with the above prediction. 'Where was no significant difference in the recognition performance for picture and picture(s) +word(s) triads. But, both picture and picture(s) +word(s) triads produced significantly better recognition performance as compared to word triads. A possibility of interaction of verbal and non-verbal codes to facilitate retention was also indicated by by the data. The Endings were consistent with the dual coding theory.
