Abstract
The Relationship Between "Maternity Blues" and Symptom of Puerperal (Atypical) Depression Six to Eight Weeks after Childbirth
G. Morsbach & R.M. Gordon
The present study investigated the relationship between Maternity Blues and depressed states six to eight weeks after childbirth. A group of 96 mothers were interviewed on a Blues questionnaire during their lying-in period. From this group two sub-groups were selected, either with very high or very low Blues scores, and re-interviewed six to eight weeks later with the help of Pitt's (1968) questionnaire on atypical depression. It was found that mothers who had suffered severely from Maternity Blues were also significantly more depressed at the time of the second interview when compared to mothers who had not had Maternity Blues.
