Abstract
The Effects of Self-Schemata and Sex Stereotypes on the Perception of Others
Y. Endo
It has been insisted that the self as cognitive system is predominant in all situations. The present study was designed to clarify whether the self would have such a strong effect when targets were out-group members or when sex stereotype counteracted the self concept. The following; were revealed from the experiment including trait rating and recall test. The male independent schematics were sensitive only to the schematic information about the male targets. Sex stereotype, rather than self-schema, was used in perception of the opposite sexes. The female schematics showed some inconsistent responses. Thus, there was a sex difference in function of self schema related to sex stereotype domains, and self-schema of male served as a cognitive framework in perception of the others of the same sex, but not in perception of the others of the opposite sex.
