Adolescent
Self-concept in Transitional Societies: Lmplications for Counselling
in Nigeria
A.A. Olowu |
Counselling
is an interpersonal relationship in which one person (the counsellor)
attempts to help another (the Counsellee) to understand and cope
with his problems in the areas of education, vocation, family relationships
and so on. The term covers a wide range of procedures including the
giving of advice and encouragement, providing information concerning
available opportunities, and the interpretation of test results. It is thought that the conflict that arose as a result of the meeting of the traditional and western cultures in transitional societies is one of the major contributory factor for the warped self-concept of the Nigerian adolescents particularly those in the urban centers. This situation makes special demands on the Nigerian counsellors in managing the conflicting values. It is suggested that Nigerian counsellors should take cognisance of the culture and values of the society in which they work. This is necessary if they are to succeed. |
