G. Domino, D. Affonso & M. Slobin
The role of community psychology in China is reviewed, since there is an increasing number of psychologists who visit and are interested in collaborative efforts with the Chinese. A historical overview is given and mention is made of five socio-cultural forces that are particularly salient: the role of the extended family, the centrality of the government, the concept of filial piety, loss of face, and the "heavenly way". Illustrative of Chinese community psychology are the current status of academic psychology, massive social interventions, the commune system, the role of women, and the role of the mental hospital.
