Abstract
Effects of Processing Variables on Judgements of Text Learning
M. Matsuda
Three experiments are reported which examine correlational relationships between text recognition remarks and subject's rated confidence values in correctness for their own recognition responses. For younger subjects, negative correlations between their inference recognition of macro-structure of the-text and their rated values for confidence in correctness for those responses are obtained, while positive ones are always seen for verbatim recognition of the same texts. The results are discussed in terms of overconfidence evidenced by younger readers in understanding text materials when they are confronted with coherence gaps in reading.
