Two
cases with similar presenting problems and underlying causes are
described to demonstrate the need to avoid definitive general positions
for or against the targeting of symptoms in psychotherapy. Whereas
one client showed lasting recovery following the direct treatment
of his symptoms, the second client did not benefit from this approach
and produced substitute symptoms until the underlying cause of his
problems was addressed.
