Abstract
The Behavioural Treatment of Two Victims of Magic and the Issue of Symptom Substitution
A.A. Keltner
Two cases with similar presenting problems and underlying causes are described to demonstrate the need to avoid definitive general positions for or against the targeting of symptoms in psychotherapy. Whereas one client showed lasting recovery following the direct treatment of his symptoms, the second client did not benefit from this approach and produced substitute symptoms until the underlying cause of his problems was addressed.
