Abstract
The Place of Eastern and Western Culture in the Minds of Contemporary Japanese Young People: A Study of Fairy Tale Memory Recall
T. Sugioka
In this research, Japanese high-school students were played tapes of a Japanese and a Grimms' fairy tale; their rate of recall was tested, and their comments and alterations were noted. The results were then analyzed with respect to the roles played by Eastern and Western culture in producing these results. Incorporation of a linear, Western style rationale, lack of incorporation of Western symbols, a lack of familiarity with traditional Japanese representations together with a strong, emotional reaction to the Japanese story nonethess, were among the results noted. The analysis of these results required looking deep into the psyche of the subjects, and provided enlightenment with regard to human tendencies in general.
