K. Tanaka
A revised version of the Anderson Story Completion Test was administered to Japanese and American university students. This test is not only the indivisual characteristics in the inter-personal relationship, but also the cultural characteristics in resolving conflict situations. Although on the surface solutions by Japanese students resembled those by American subjects, analysis showed that these entailed deep psychological processes are quite different. The differences between the `immediate-confrontation' type, characteristic of American subjects, and the `spiral-reward' type, characteristic of Japanese subjects, were discussed. The latter type was able to confronted the conflict situation only after wavering between the various alternatives for some time.
