Abstract
The Differences beween Musicians and Nonmusicians in the Utilization of Asymmetrical Brain Function during a Melody Recognition Task
N. Minagawa, M. Nakagawa & K. Kashu
Sixteen student musicians and sixteen student nonmusicians participated in a dichotically presented melody recognition task. The differences between the two subject-groups were evident quantitatively and qualitatively. The overall performance level of the musicians was better than that of the nonmusicians. More interestingly, the dominant ear of nonmusicians, as for their performance, reversed between the first and the second half of the experiment. They showed left ear advantage in the first half and right ear advantage in the second half. In the musicians, consistent right ear advantage was observed in the course of the experiment.
