Abstract
The Manner of Clasping the Hands and Individual Differences in Perceptual Asymmetries and Cognitive Modes
Y. Ida
The present paper summarizes a number of experimental results in which the manner of clasping the hands showed relations with individual differences in hemispheric asymmetries of the brain. Two groups can be distinguished by the manner of clasping the hands according to which thumb is placed uppermost. The two groups have been found to differ in both the degree of perceptual asymmetries and the cognitive modes which may reflect functional differences between the left and the right hemispheres of the brain. The possibility to explain these two aspects consistently is discussed, and the manner of clasping the hands is suggested to reflect partial preponderance or arousal of the hemispheres. A comparison is made with a similar trait, i.e., the manner of folding the arms, which has also been found to connect with these two aspects.
