Abstract
George Kelly's Personal Construct Theory: Some Comparisons with Freudian Theory
M.M. Delmonte
The influence of Freudian thinking on George Kelly's Personal Construct Theory are examined. Kelly used and developed many psycho-analytic concepts such as transference, projection, the unconscious, resistence, free association and so forth. However, he did not confine himself to a psycho-dynamic model and worked at developing a meta-theory which also showed the influence of other approaches to psychotherapy-namely existentialism, behaviourism, humanism, Rogerian theory, and Gestalt theory. This has lead to the emergene of an integrated theory with an eclectic practice called constructivism. Such a theory may facilitate the further development of a systematic and technically eclectic approach to psychotherapy.
