S. Khanna
The present study is conducted to determine life stress among working and nonworking women in relation to anxiety and depression. Here 406 women are defined in terms of work status, 220 of them working and 186 nonworking are selected from the urban localities of Jalandhar (Punjab) and Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) in India. These women are investigated through three tests, namely, Life Experience Survey, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Beck's Depression Inventory. Correlational analysis reveals that: 1. Anxiety is significantly and negatively related to positive life change in nonworking women; 2. Depression is significantly and positively related to positive life change in working women, and negative life change in nonworking women. These results suggest that in India, among working women positive life changes are related to depression, whereas among nonworking women positive life changes are related to anxiety, and negative life changes to depression.
