Abstract
Mental Illness, Self Deception and Differing Views of Reality
G. Shean
This paper illustrates how self deception can be understood as constructions intended to preserve the status quo of our sense of identity. Excerpts from interviews with delusional individuals and the statements of public figures are presented to illustrate how frequently our statements, logical and illogical, mirror Sartre's categories of self deception. It is suggested that the different patterns and degrees of self-deception ilustrated in this paper fall into a single spectrum.
