Abstract
Dichotic Listening of Chinese and English words
K.-F. Ip & R. Hoosain
Suggestion of greater involvement of the right hemisphere for Chinese language is based on the ideographic nature of the script as well as the semantic function of tonal variation of Chinese pronunciations. Recent visual studies have shown that findings of right hemisphere lateralization are due to general perceptual factors rather than language specific factros. In this dichotic listening study of Chinese-English bilinguals, right ear advantage was found for both Chinese and English words. There was no support for the hypothesis of greater right hemisphere involvement for processing of Chinese, nor for differential lateralization as a result of bilingual experience.
