Abstract
Perception of Indian Women: A Comparison of Career and Non-Career Women
S. Bharat
The study compared 100 career and an equal number of non-career women and their spouses on their perception of the "Indian Women". The respondents were required to describe the qualities that they desired/not desired in the "Indian Women". It was expected that the higher professional status and higher educational and income levels of the career women would influence their and their spouses' perception of the "Indian Women" in non-traditional and more egalitarian ways. Results indicate that compared to the non-career women, career women and their spouses perceived "Indian Women" in both traditional, as well as, non-traditional terms, particularly emphasising on their ability to strike a balance between their family and work spheres. Implications of the findings are discussed with regard to socialisation and role burden experienced by working women.
