Cross-Cultural
Psychology in China: Present Situation and Future
J. Hong & X. Wang |
Based
upon nearly one hundred of articles, reports, and presentations since
the 1980s in the People's Republic of China, this article gives a
brief review and critical analysis on several aspects of cross-cultural
psychology, including the present situation, existing problems and
future prospects. The present situation is that the dominant studies
are those across nationalities within the country. Their major areas
are verification of well-known theories and comparative studies of
mental development and education in children and adolescents of the
majority nationality Han and the minorities. Comparatively, studies
of deep exploration and the utilization of methods developed in sociology,
anthropology, and cross-cultural psychology itself are lacking. The
future research of cross-cultural psychology must exploit new areas
and topics concerning indigenous psychology, put stress on its own
theoretical research and the guidance on its empirical study and
its application; also, the cultural variables must be differentiated
and strictly controlled. Thus a new prospect for the field in China
will be opened up.
