The
purpose of the present study is to determine the relationship of
six kinds of mother's and father's behaviours viz., restrictive,
permissive, loving, neglecting, protective and rejective on three
specific personality traits viz., hostility, self-esteem and self
disclosure of their offsprings. For this a random sample of 340 adolescents
aged 1 fi-1 S yrs were administered Ojha Parental Behaviour Inventory,
Bending Hostility Scale, Mohsin self-concept Inventory and Jourard
Self-Disclosure Inventory. It was found that both mother's and father's
behaviours, in general, were significantly related with each of personality
traits. Multiple regression analyses for the relative contribution
of each of mother's and father's behaviours to each personality trait
revealed that (1) mother's rejection and father's restriction are
the significant positive contributors to hostility in adolescents,
(2) protective behaviours of both parents contribute significantly
positively while their rejective behaviour contribute significantly
negatively to self-esteem; and (3) mother's permissiveness and father's
love contribute significantly and positively to self-disclosure.
