Education
and caste Hindu attitude of the Harijans
P. Shanker |
In
order to determine the impact of college education on the caste Hindu
attitude of the Harijans, two groups of adult male Harijans-twenty
each-were selected for study, one of the groups consisted of college
going students while the other did not have any education, The groups
were equated on such factors as age, sex, family income etc. The
attitude-affect was assessed by open-ended questions, subjective
impressions and from an incident involving a caste Hindu. The favourable
and the unfavourable stereotypes regarding caste Hindus were also
obtained. Although there was no difference between the two groups
in the attitude-affect, there was significant difference between
them in the caste Hindu stereotypes. Total number of stereotypes
as well as the number of unfavourable stereotypes were significantly
large in the educated group. The results indicate a difference in
the cognitive component of attitude which is more unfavourable in
the educated as compared to the non-educated group.
