K. Imae & T. Umemoto
This paper dealt with the validity of meaningfulness scale for number and syllable as materials in verbal learning. Two problems were asked ; 2 . Is it possible to predict rate of learning of numbers by its meaningfulness? 2. As a predictor of rate of learning, is meaningfulness valid for items of different verbal material in a list? Four experiments were run under the line of problems, and following conclusions were obtained. 1. Meaningfulness is a good predictor of learning even for numbers. 2. We cannot predict rate of learning of items solely from its meaningfulness when items belong to different groups of material. That is, meaningfulness is effective variable only when all items are of same material.
