Abstract
The sources of contextual constraint upon words in sentences : a replication
R.Sahgal & S. Chandra
This paper replicates Aborn, Rubenstein & Sterling's (1959) `The sources of contextual constraint upon words in sentences.' The object of the present investigation was to ascertain how far the results of previous study hold for an Indian sample. The results confirm some of the findings of the original study. There are, however, some new findings: (1) differences are not significant in the case of differing sentence lengths and (2) the interactions of the three variables-word class, sentence length and position of omission-also affect predictability. "It is concluded that distribution and grammatical structure of context are independently sources of constraint on words in sentences and these sources of contextual constraint are replicable phenomena".
