As a pioneer in psychosomatic medicine the author reports on the life and achievement of Sanzaburo Kobayashi, M.D. (1863-1926) who studied surgery in the United States and practised in Hawaii for about 15 years with great fame, and on returning to Japan learned seiza (sitting quietly) and cured his own neurasthenia and then helped his patients with the integration of modern medicine, seiza and religious belief.
