Literacy
and mental hospital admissions
S. Rao |
The
relationship between admission to the mental hospital and literacy
has been investigated in this paper. Admissions steadily increase
with the educational level of the patients. There are indications
to show that people with university education in the event of a mental
breakdown, may show a tendency to seek psychiatric aid outside the
public hospital. Urban residence and better economic position also
are associated with admission to the hospital. There is a high positive
correlation between admission rates and the literacy level of an
area. So it is likely that education as a single factor promotes
better attitude to hospitalization in case of mental illness.
