Myside bias is our tendency to neglect arguments and evidence that are contrary to prior beliefs. Although people are theoratically capable of using their intelligence and logical faculties to ascertain truth, we often use such capacities instead to rationalize our convictions. Perhaps this can be most commonly observed in the phrase "good debators can win from any position". Indeed, myside bias can be beneficial to individuals, allowing them to "win" or increase their social standing. However, at a societal level, myside bias can be very problematic. It polarizes groups, decreases trust and cooperation, and makes individuals hold increasingly extreme positions.
